For every budget, there’s a deck box and not having or wanting to spend much money doesn’t mean you can’t get a good quality one. Yes, there are doozies out there that cost too much and are rubbish. Apply what I outlined here and take a look the options below you’ll end up with the perfect deck box. A lot of this comes down to personal experience and the ability to actually hold and use the deck box. Of course, videos reviews can help to an extent, but ultimately when you use the box yourself will decide if it’s perfect for you and your needs. This ties in with materials pretty neatly because they are linked.
If you’re more of a cat person than a dog person, then build a deck around your feline companions! There are far more cat creature cards than dogs including several legendary creatures perfect for a Commander deck. If you search for ‘cat’ creature types, you’ll get a lot of humanoid catfolk cats like [c]Cat Warrior[/c]s. For a deck with less sentient cats, look for a specific type of cat species like [c]lion[/c], [c]tiger[/c], [c]lynx[/c], [c]puma[/c], [c]leopard[/c], and [c]cheetah[/c]. They mention it comfortably fits a single-sleeved commander deck with room for tokens, and two 100-card MTG decks with room for tokens/sideboard for each.

Usually these are categorized as “value “utility,” or “goodstuff.” My number one card that I always add to decks that goes into these categories is Mirage Mirror. It does a whole bunch of wacky stuff and is generally very good even without forwarding my strategy. Usually I end up cutting this card though, because it’s a distraction. It allows me to cast spells on other people’s turns, and in a lot of decks, it’s just a really good card. I love Search for Azcanta in decks that care about card selection. But it also fits perfectly in control decks, where this land can consistently be flipped to let you find powerful non-creature spells to put you in the driver’s seat of any game.
Sticking With the Same Deck
I’m not a big fan of Palantír of Orthanc in my decks as I find it too slow to ultimately achieve card advantage or life loss against your opponents, who may not care about one or the other. The big upside is that the more times they choose to ignore this ability, the larger the punishment they’ll get. If they let you draw cards, this is straight up card advantage, but the selection comes from the free scry 2 you get every turn. Form of the Mulldrifter is a tribal enchantment that lets you draw two cards when it comes into play. Also, when it’s put into a graveyard from the battlefield, you create a 2/2 blue Elemental creature token with flying. This enchantment can provide card advantage and a spirit creature in a pinch, making it a versatile option for your tribal deck.
EDHRec has its uses, and it can be beneficial to do some checks there. But I agree that just filling out a list based off of EDHRec’s recommendation page has it’s faults, as well. It’s good to check out all options, to see what you might have missed, or what strikes you as strange and interesting and putting that individual twist on your deck.
My first 2 precons were both graveyard type decks because that’s just what I enjoy, and almost every deck I build has lots of graveyard interaction. Consider what you enjoy most and what you build most often. Oh, and a side note Suns_Champion I’ve been brewing a Winota deck and I’ve been looking into hack cards. I really like her ability but think the pay offs would be insane if I could hack the card to hit non-humans instead of humans.
Just because a black number happened to land five times in a row, it’s not due to land on red the sixth time. This board wipe also costs a lot of mana, but is a valuable option. One of my first boxes and still super useful even on the occasions it goes inside another box or bag, the Ultra Pro Standard Deck Box fits 80 single-sleeved cards or 60 double-sleeved cards. A great deck box is one that perfectly combines the shape with its function. A good deck box design fits the amount of cards in your deck and is easy to open. You can take your deck out, but your deck won’t fall out accidentally.
Everything else in the deck that is not aiding the main goal is subject to being cut. Consider, when cutting cards by their price, that there’s a budget replacement for most any card in Magic. You just have to go back to the search bars of your prefered sites and keep digging. There are podcasts devoted to budget builds and many builders who have found budget alternatives. The resources and help are out there, you just might have to look a little harder. Surveil lands like Undercity Sewers are a huge upgrade to scry lands for multiple reasons.
#19. Spellbook Vendor
This 2/2 creature offers a modest power and toughness boost while also synergizing with other tribal support cards. In commander decks, spells like Rhystic Study can provide significant card advantage by drawing new cards whenever an opponent casts a spell. Certain card draw options work better in specific deck archetypes. For example, Esper Sentinel fits well in white decks, while Phyrexian Arena is popular in black commander decks. Ensuring your card draw choices to complement your deck’s overall strategy is vital for maximizing its effectiveness. For lands, you might consider including tribal-themed or color-specific lands that support your chosen tribe.
A similar card to this is Mirri’s Guile, which also provides the same effect to rearrange your library but misses the card draw potential. For 4 mana, you can activate Thrasios, Triton Hero to scry the top card of your library, providing you with card advantage and ramping if there’s a land on top. The big appeal is that it’s a cheap commander that can be paired with others that have the partner keyword, allowing you to dive into other colors that complement Thrasios’s main ability. Similar to its planeswalker counterpart, Aminatou, Veil Piercer allows you to rearrange the top card of your library, but with a twist. Instead of putting cards into your hand, it lets you send them to your graveyard thanks to its surveil ability. As if that weren’t enough, it also gives your enchantment spells the miracle ability, allowing you to cast them for a discount when you topdeck them.
As we meta mtg just discussed, there are many factors to consider when deciding the order in which you play spells, but the most fundamental is figuring what will have the greatest impact on the board. Take for example a situation above where you have two cards to play on your third turn. On average it is going to be better to play Wojek Bodyguard first.
Drafting with intention and strategy will lead to a better deck than just seeing where the cards take you. If you are forcing, make sure you understand which cards are best for your archetype(s) before the draft begins. If you aren’t forcing, make sure you frequently reflect on the cards you have already selected and know when to commit (this takes practice).
Second, even if you draw Pridemate, he is very susceptible to removal spells and could leave you with a hand full of second-rate cards. Despite this, please keep in mind that synergy is a great thing to have! You just want to make sure your deck isn’t compromising itself too much in order to support a certain theme.
